A lesson in the power of compassion

How can you make a difference to someone’s life?

The power of compassion for others experiencing adversity was highlighted at a recent team gathering where we heard real-life stories from people who’ve needed support – and given it.

It was a privilege to hear navy veteran Shaun share his experience on how unresolved trauma and active service led to mental health issues and time in prison.

Behind bars Shaun had a chance encounter with Correctional Officer, and fellow army veteran, Chris whose support helped him on the path to recovery. Chris is now working with the Australian Government’s Departments of Veterans’ Affairs recommending a national approach for supporting incarcerated veterans so they can receive the help they need.

Catherine House Philanthropy and Engagement Officer Jaylee gave us an insight into the work the charity does providing short term accommodation and other support services to South Australian women experiencing homelessness. Sadly, this risk is increasing with women aged between 35 and 45 the fastest growing group of people experiencing homelessness in Australia today.
